Volunteering

Can I volunteer in Thailand with KMI?

Yes. We welcome volunteers to teach English, lead children’s activities, tutor computers or music, and help with community outreach in Mae Sai, Chiang Rai. Apply online with a short CV and a 2-minute introduction video.

Do I need teaching experience?

No formal teaching experience is required. We look for people with a heart to serve, who enjoy children and young people, and who can commit to the time they offer.

Do you help with a volunteer visa?

Yes. After you are accepted we provide the documents you need to apply for a Non-Immigrant O (volunteer) visa at a Thai embassy or consulate. Visa rules change, so always check with your local Thai embassy.

What does volunteering cost?

Volunteering is unpaid and we do not charge a placement fee. We provide accommodation during your placement. You cover your flights, visa fees, meals, insurance and personal costs. Many volunteers raise support from their church or friends.

Do I have to be a Christian to volunteer?

No. Volunteers of any faith or none are welcome in our community roles, such as teaching English, children’s activities, computer and music tutoring and outreach to families. We are a Christian foundation, so our team life includes prayer, and some programmes, such as church partnerships and Christmas outreach, are openly Christian. We ask every volunteer to respect that, and we will respect you.

Can families with children volunteer together?

Yes. Families can serve together in children’s activities, English practice, crafts, music and community visits. We plan roles around your children’s ages and keep every child supervised by their own parents. See our family volunteering page for details.

Do you host YWAM DTS outreach teams?

Yes. We have hosted YWAM teams from Canada and other countries for school programmes, English camps, health teaching, village outreach and church partnership in Mae Sai and the Golden Triangle. Contact us with your outreach dates and team size.

Do I need a TEFL certificate to teach English?

No. A TEFL or teaching qualification is welcome but not required. Native or fluent English speakers who are patient, prepared and reliable make excellent volunteer teachers, and we help you plan lessons.

When is the best time to volunteer in Thailand?

November to February is cool and dry. Thai schools are in session roughly mid-May to September and November to March, which is ideal for teaching. The rainy season (about August to October) can bring flooding to Mae Sai.

How do I get to Mae Sai?

Fly to Mae Fah Luang–Chiang Rai International Airport (CEI), usually via Bangkok. Mae Sai is about an hour’s drive north of the airport, and we can help arrange your pickup.

Can our church send a short-term mission team?

Yes. We host church and ministry teams for school programmes, children’s outreach, health teaching and church partnership in the Mae Sai and Chiang Rai area. Contact us with your dates and team size.

Mae Sai is a friendly border town. Like anywhere, use normal care. The main seasonal risk is flooding in the rainy season (roughly August–October). We brief every volunteer on arrival and stay in close contact.
