  • A TEFL, teaching or youth-work background is a plus, not a must

Volunteering with KMI Thailand gave me a wonderful opportunity to connect with children and learn more about life and ministry in this part of the world. The children brought so much energy and joy to each activity. I appreciated how the team welcomed me, helped me understand the local context, and made me feel part of the work rather than just a visitor. It was a valuable experience that encouraged me to keep serving others.

My experience with KMI Thailand gave me a closer look at the realities of cross-cultural ministry. I appreciated the chance to work alongside people who are committed to education, discipleship, and community development. I learned a lot from the local context and from the team’s approach to serving people with respect and care. I would encourage anyone considering cross-cultural service to come ready to learn as well as to help.

Teaching questions

Do you help with a volunteer visa?

Yes. After you are accepted we provide the documents you need to apply for a Non-Immigrant O (volunteer) visa at a Thai embassy or consulate. Visa rules change, so always check with your local Thai embassy.

What does volunteering cost?

Volunteering is unpaid and we do not charge a placement fee. We provide accommodation during your placement. You cover your flights, visa fees, meals, insurance and personal costs. Many volunteers raise support from their church or friends.

Do I need a TEFL certificate to teach English?

No. A TEFL or teaching qualification is welcome but not required. Native or fluent English speakers who are patient, prepared and reliable make excellent volunteer teachers, and we help you plan lessons.

When is the best time to volunteer in Thailand?

November to February is cool and dry. Thai schools are in session roughly mid-May to September and November to March, which is ideal for teaching. The rainy season (about August to October) can bring flooding to Mae Sai.

Who will I teach?

Primary and secondary students in partner government schools, and teenagers and young adults in our free after-school classes. Many are Thai; some come from Burmese and hill-tribe families.

Will I get help planning lessons?

Yes. Our team shares lesson plans and resources and explains your students’ levels before you start. Simple, well-prepared activities work best.
